Notes:
1. All seven Bambara vowels - a, e, ɛ, i, o, ɔ, u - can take tone
markings (above the letters), but these are normally not used except in language reference materials
or special publications.
2. In an earlier Malian orthography, now obsolete, the e with grave accent - è
- was used for this sound.
3. This letter is also seen - but rarely in West Africa - as a capital N with
a hook under the right leg.
4. In an earlier Malian orthography, now obsolete, the digraph ny was used for
this sound.
5. In Senegalese orthography, the n-tilda - ñ - is used instead of this letter,
and would presumably be used for Bambara in eastern Senegal.
6. This letter is also seen as the larger form of the lower case letter.
7. In an earlier Malian orthography, now obsolete, the o with grave accent - ò
- was used for this sound.
Unicode characters are inserted into HTML documents with:
"" plus DEC number plus ";" or "" plus HEX code plus ";" (The x and HEX code letters are not case sensitive.)
For example, ŋ or ŋ or ŋ represent ŋ.
