"The Global Initiative for Local Computing (GILC), launched in September 2005, will work with appropriate organisations and individuals around the world to ensure that all people have access to computers and information technologies - in their preferred language and adhering to their favoured cultural practices. The GILC office is based at the Localisation Research Centre (LRC) at the University of Limerick."

"GILC aims to help in achieving:

  • Computers that are able to work in all major languages, with encodings and rendering engines for their writings systems and freely available software and fonts to support their use
  • Working groups that are actively adding new languages to those for which computers have already been enabled
  • Local human activities, in all their diversity, that are supported by appropriate software and information technologies" (from the GILC site)
