International language of wider communication is an international LWC or lingua franca. The term has been used academically, in the context of discussions of language policy and language planning?.

Many African languages serve as LWCs or local linguae francae, but among them probably only Arabic could be considered an ILWC. The European or Europhone LWCs (ELWCs) are also ILWCs.

At least one author (Heugh 2013) uses the term ILWC to refer to languages of European origin used in Africa (what in this wiki are referred to as ELWCs).
