Ijo

1.  Classification / Classification

Ijo or Ijaw represents a "language cluster" within Kwa.... More recent treatments (Bennett and Sterk 1977) suggest that the Ijoid languages are not part of the Benue-Congo group but are more distantly related. (Webbook?)

It is spoken in Bendel and Rivers states, Nigeria. (Webbook)

Williamson found four "major dialect clusters" which she felt to be mutually unintelligible; ... She noted that "there is no standard form of Ijo" (personal communication, 1983). (Webbook, with modification)

Several of the dialect clusters have standardized orthographies introduced by Williamson; some do not. (Webbook) These are Latin-based alphabets including diacritic characters.
