Ethnologue gives its classification as: Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, North, Gur, Central, Northern, Oti-Volta, Western, Northwest. Ethnologue also indicates it has a 79% lexical similarity with Southern Dagaare.

Northern Region of Ghana.

''Ethnologue cites a 2003 estimate of 4,000. A VOA article in 2015 puts the number at 7,000.
