The "Simputer" (from "simple, inexpensive and multilingual people's computer") is a hand-held computer. It was originally designed by the Simputer Trust in India in 1999. The hope was that it could make ICT accessible to more people in poor countries.

The Simputer Trust has licensed two companies to produce Simputer, but apparently production never reached hoped-for levels. Wikipedia cites sources calling the project a failure.

The Simputer included text-to-speech software and ran the GNU/Linux operating system.
