Virtaal is described as a graphical translation tool or a "multi-format translation tool." It is meant to be easy to use and powerful at the same time. Although the initial focus was on software translation (localisation or l10n), it is intended it to be useful for several purposes.

Virtaal is built on the powerful API of the Translate Toolkit. The name “Virtaal” is an Afrikaans play on words meaning “For Language”, but also referring to translation.

Virtaal is maintained by Translate House. It was originally developed by (predecessor of Translate House) within the Localisation Tools component of the ANLoc project.
