ASCII

ASCII - American Standard Code for Information Interchange - is a 7-bit encoding originally for the English alphabet. It is effectively the same as ISO-646.

"The worldwide standard for the code numbers used by computers to represent all the uppercase and lowercase Latin letters, numbers, punctuation and other symbols." (Multilingual)

ASCII is still in use although various 8-bit encodings and now Unicode facilitates use of more characters and scripts.
