EPUB (short for electronic publication and sometimes seen as ePub) is an e-book that can be downloaded and read on a device like a smartphone, tablet, computer, or E-reader. It is a free and open standard published by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). (Wikipedia)

The current version of the standard is EPUB 3. "EPUB 3 was developed pursuant to a charter approved by the IDPF Membership in May, 2010. EPUB 3.0 was approved by the IDPF membership as a final Recommended Specification effective October 11, 2011, and superseded the previous release of EPUB (2.0.1)." (IDPF)
