1. Classification / Classification
Linguistic lineage:
Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Plateau, Central, South-Central (Ethnologue?)
Alternate names: Kaje, Kajji, Kache (Ethnologue)
2. Where Spoken / Localisation géographique
Jju is spoken by the Bajju people of Southern Kaduna, Nigeria. Specifically, it is spoken in Zangon Kataf LGA, Kaduna State. (Zitt)
3. Number of Speakers / Nombre de locuteurs
As with all Nigerian languages, a lack of sufficient data at the present time means there are only estimates. According to the Ethnologue, the Bajju were estimated to number 300,000 in 1988. If one were to use an annual growth rate figure of 3% for Kaduna State (Nigeria 2006 Census), then the Bajju can be estimated to be well over 400,000 in number.
As a language with fewer than 1 million speakers, it is a minority language. Locally, it is one of the larger languages of Southern Kaduna, but it is endangered by Hausa, the lingua franca of northern Nigeria.
