Scientific Animations Without Borders (SAWBO)

Scientific Animations Without Borders (SAWBO) is a program, based at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. SAWBO was co-founded and is co-directed by Drs. Julia Bello-Bravo and Barry Pittendrigh. SAWBO creates animations explaining concepts that can be used to improve agricultural production, reduce postharvest losses, and prevent and treat diseases. Animations are translated into numerous languages and are made freely available to any group interested in deploying these videos for educational purposes. SAWBO works closely with both experts around the globe and also students at the University of Illinois to create these animations. The SAWBO program then makes these videos freely available to other groups that want to use them for educational purposes only. Thus, SAWBO typically does not directly deploy their animations in the field, but instead is focused on making content available that can be used by other groups in their educational programs. SAWBO has and continues to partner with local non-government organizations NGOs, government organizations, and other academic institutions to create and deploy these videos in the field. SAWBO also collaborates with individuals interested in deploying animations. SAWBO animations can be viewed and downloaded from SAWBO's Video Library or the SAWBO YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/SAWBOsm).

Summary of SAWBO to Date

SAWBO creates animations on Health, Agricultural and Women's Empowerment.

The animations are created in collaboration with individuals and groups that are content experts on the given topic.

All new SAWBO animations are created based on the availability of outside funding support, with the stipulation that all animations be made freely available to anyone who want to use them for educational purposes only.

The SAWBO team relies on volunteers to translate animations into new languages and perform the voice recordings.

SAWBO animations have been voice overlaid in more than 70 different languages.

A significant number of animations have African language voice-overs as the SAWBO began with projects focused on topics important to West Africa.

The team seeks to expand the numbers of language variants both in Africa and globally.

SAWBO Deployer App for Android and iOS Phones

The SAWBO Deployer App allows users, when connected to the Internet, to access SAWBO's 3gp video library through either Android or iOS? smartphones?. The SAWBO Deployer App allows users to search videos by their country, language, and topic. Once the user finds the desired video, he or she can watch it, download it, or in the case of the Android version share it offline with other cell phones via a Bluetooth connection. The Android version of the App can also be shared between Android devices. The iOS version only allows one to download and view the animations. SAWBO strongly suggests using the Android version of the App for those wishing to use it in developing nation settings. The Android version can be downloaded at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=edu.uiuc.sawbo and it is available for free.
