Same-language subtitling

Same-language subtitling (SLS) is the term given to subtitling of a film or video in the language spoken or sung (as opposed to subtitling in another language). This is similar to closed-captioning. The primary use of SLS has been for literacy?.

At least two organisations have been working on SLS:

  • PlanetRead http://www.planetread.org/ - Based in India and founded by Dr. Brij Kothari, this organisation focuses on "subtitling the lyrics of existing film songs (or music videos) on TV, in the ‘same’ language that they are sung in." They have apparently had measurable results from this approach. PlanetRead has also discussed collaboration with Kasahorow.
  • Tertia http://tertia.us/ - Based in California, US, and founded by Michael Novak, this organisation is involved in several areas relating to reading and technology, including same-language subtitling of videos. Some of their work has involved African languages.

Technically, PlanetRead's approach relies on hand entering text for subtitles, while Tertia is experimenting with automatic generation of subtitles.
