UNDP / PNUD

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Said to be "the largest multilateral source of development assistance in the world."

  • PNUD =
    • en français, le Programme des Nations Unies pour le Développement
    • em português, o Programa das Nações Unidas para o Desenvolvimento

Website: http://www.undp.org

Among the programs of this agency:

  • Annual publication of the Human Development Report (which includes among other things the literacy figures quoted in the country profiles on this wiki
  • The International Open Source Network (IOSN)
  • Some ICT4D activities (see below)

Internet Initiative for Africa (IIA)

IIA was founded in 1996. It "consisted of two basic components: the promotion of official receptivity to the introduction of the Internet on the part of African governments, and facilitating the building of Internet nodes in countries that did not have one or needed to reinforce what existed." (Okpaku 2003:288) In the latter, it was somewhat similar to the USAID Leland Initiative, and the two projects coordinated their efforts to maximize coverage. (Okpaku 2003:289)

According to UNDP, the IIA provided "Internet connectivity infrastructure, policy advice, and capacity building support to Angola, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Chad, Ethiopia, Gambia, Mauritania, Namibia, Nigeria, and Swaziland."

UNDP / CISCO Networking Academies

UNDP established a "strategic parnership" with Cisco Systems to support 15 of the latter's 19 "Cisco Networking Academies" in Africa.
