Vai language

A Mande language of Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Uses the indigenous Vai syllabary as the writing system.

According to Ethnologue:

  • Classification: Niger-Congo, Mande, Western, Central-Southwestern, Central, Manding-Jogo, Manding-Vai, Vai-Kono
  • Population: 89,500 in Liberia (1991 L. Vanderaa CRC). 15,500 in Sierra Leone (1991). Population total all countries: 105,000.
